In the far North of Chile, the Valley of the Moon, as the Atacama desert is also known, covers an aera of about a fifth of the country.
Except for the exceptional scenery there are a few things that will keep you here for more than just a day. In the desert you will find geoglyphs: huge ancient drawings of animals and the Giant of the Atacama.
You can also see llamas sheep and goats and visit oases beaches old mines and deserted mining towns. The best time to visit is June-October (during Chile’s winter).
